GOOD Laundry Initiative

The residents in the North Flint area often do not have access to a washer and dryer in their home.  A condition where families must choose between paying for food and utilities or personal hygiene is called “hygiene poverty” Studies show that having access to clean clothes builds a person’s sense of self-worth and dignity. When a family has access to laundry facilities, they boost their chances of securing steady employment and reducing their children’s absenteeism from school. Wearing clean clothes provides children and youth with confidence and defends against bullying, stigmatizing, ridicule and rejection. Clean clothes can mean the difference between a family’s sense of agency or feelings of defeat.
